Uttara Kannada’s Treasure Trove
Located in the Uttara Kannada District of Karnataka State, India, the magnificent Dandeli National Park, also known as Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary, spans over 800 square kilometers and sits at an altitude ranging from 100 to 970 meters. Characterized by steep slopes, alluring deep rivers, and breathtakingly beautiful valleys, it abounds with a rich diversity of flora and fauna. In 2006, along with the neighboring Anshi National Park, the sanctuary was declared a part of the Anshi Dandeli Tiger Reserve.
The enchanting Dandeli Jungle typically comprises a moist deciduous, semi-evergreen forest, adorned with pockets of evergreen forests and interspersed with bamboo and teak plantations. The sanctuary thrives with a rich diversity of flora and fauna. Dandeli boasts over 20 species of mammals, more than 250 species of birds, and a variety of snakes and other reptiles. Within the dense forests of Dandeli, you can encounter wild animals like bears, antelopes, elephants, deer, leopards, tigers, and black panthers, as well as several reptiles.
Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is a birdwatcher's paradise, renowned for its Great Hornbill (also known as the Great Indian Hornbill or Great Pied Hornbill) and the Malabar Pied Hornbill. It stands as the sole known tiger reserve in India with frequent sightings of the elusive Black Panther. Additionally, the sanctuary is a habitat for the Indian Sloth Bear, Dhole, Giant Malabar Squirrel, Indian Jackal, Indian Pangolin, and Muntjac (Barking Deer). Sightings of the Indian Elephant and Indian Peafowl are quite common. The King Cobra and Mugger Crocodile (Indian Crocodile) are also major wildlife attractions in Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary.
For photography enthusiasts, guided tours of the wild in Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary increase your chances of spotting wildlife and capturing memories for posterity. The sanctuary offers a unique combination of bird watching and crocodile spotting. Whether you choose to walk through the forest, go on nature walks, treks, or wildlife safaris, knowledgeable guides will accompany you, ensuring you enjoy the limited access available to the public within the tiger reserve.
A word of caution: Please ensure that you wear muted colors and avoid bright attire that may attract wild animals. Dress comfortably with running shoes for the trek. Remember, stealth is the key to spotting wild animals here.
Having said that, the best months to visit Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary are from March to October. However, bear in mind that the region experiences the highest rainfall between August and November, making this season less ideal for wildlife spotting. Nevertheless, you will still have the opportunity to see plenty of birds, crocodiles, and reptiles. Moreover, the River Kali would be flowing in its full swell during this season.
